Now, Shop Owners In This Madhya Pradesh Town Directed To Display Names

 The BJP-ruled Ujjain Municipal Corporation on Saturday directed shop owners to display their names and mobile numbers outside their establishments in the ancient city, a directive coming on the heels of a similar order by the BJP government in UP for eateries along Kanwar Yatra route.

Violators will have to pay a ₹ 2,000 fine for the first offence and ₹ 5,000 if they defy this order for the second time, said Ujjain Mayor Mukesh Tatwal.

This order is aimed at ensuring safety and transparency and not intended to target Muslim shop-keepers, the mayor said.

Ujjain, the hometown of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is known for its sacred Mahakal temple, attracting devotees from around the globe, especially during the Savaan month starting Monday.

Mr Tatwal said the Mayor-in-Council of Ujjain had approved a proposal for shopkeepers to display their names on September 26, 2002, followed by the Corporation House, and subsequently sent it to the state government for objections and formalities.

"All formalities have been already completed. The implementation was delayed as the nameplates were initially required to be of the same size and colour. Now, we have relaxed these terms. Displaying the names and mobile numbers of shopkeepers will suffice," he told PTI over the phone.

He stressed that the measure is rooted in the MP Shop Establishment Act or Gumasta License, and it serves to enhance customer safety.

"Ujjain is a religious and holy city. People come here with religious aastha. They have the right to know about the shopkeeper whose services they are availing. If a customer is dissatisfied or cheated, knowing the shopkeeper's details allows them to seek redress," the mayor said.

Ujjain is set to host the Simhastha (Kumbh) Mela in 2028, a significant religious fair held every 12 years.

This action mirrors the recent directive in Uttar Pradesh, where all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route were asked to display owners' names.

The Uttar Pradesh government extended this order statewide on Friday, while Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said similar instructions are already in place there.

The order has faced criticism from opposition parties and some members of the ruling alliance, who argue it targets Muslim traders.

Baba Ramdev backs Kanwar Yatra order: ‘Why should Rahman

 

Yoga guru and businessman Baba Ramdev on Sunday backed the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand government's direction to shopkeepers along the Kanwar Yatra route to display their names, saying everyone should be proud of their names.

He said if Ramdev doesn't have a problem revealing his identity, why should 'Rahman' have issues with it?

"If Ramdev has no problem in revealing his identity, then why should Rahman have a problem in revealing his identity? Everyone should be proud of their name. There is no need to hide the name, only purity is required in work. If our work is pure, it does not matter if we are Hindu, Muslim or from any other community..." he said on Sunday morning.

After the Uttarakhand and UP government's move, the Ujjain municipal body has also ordered shopkeepers to display their names.

Several Opposition leaders have opposed the Kanwar order.

All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi said that it reflects the growing hatred towards Muslims in India.

"Fear on UP's Kanwar routes: This is The reality of hatred for Indian Muslims, credit for this visceral hatred goes to political parties, leaders of Hindutva and so-called lip servicing Secular parties," Owaisi said in a post on 'X'.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat also hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government over this move likening it to Nazi Germany.

"The Uttar Pradesh government is destroying the Constitution of India by issuing such orders...A whole community is being humiliated...They are trying to divide society...This type of targeting was done by Nazis in Germany...I condemn it," she said.

Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut accused the BJP of ending the unity of the country.

"Now you (BJP) are directing food stalls to put up nameplates based on caste and religion? Do you want to divide the country? You won't profit from it. You are breaking the nation's unity," Raut said.

West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party chief Sukanta Majumdar accused the Opposition of misleading the country. He claimed similar notifications were issued during the Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav governments.

Over 400 Indian students evacuated from Bangladesh: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma

 About 405 Indian students, including 80 from Meghalaya, have been evacuated from restless Bangladesh into India through the Dawki integrated check-post as on date, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said on Friday.
In addition, a significant number of students from Nepal and some pupils from Bhutan have also entered the state through Dawki.
“There are a lot of students from many parts of the world studying there who have been affected.

As soon as we got this information, we immediately swung into action and evacuated close to 405 students from India through Dawki. Of them, about 80 are from Meghalaya,” the CM told reporters on Friday evening.
“We also have students from Bhutan and Nepal and some tourists who were stuck and have crossed the border from the Dawki side,” he added.

“At the same time, some concerns have been raised regarding one particular college, Eastern Medical College, where about 36 students of ours are there. We are in touch with the officials and with the Indian Embassy,” he said.
He added, “So, I want to tell all the parents that we are continuously in touch with them. Unless and until we are very sure that the route is clear and they can be safely brought to the border, we will have to watch the situation,” he said, adding, they would be entering through Tripura.

As per official information, a total of 127 Indian students (39 are from Meghalaya) studying in Eastern Medical College in Bangladesh are leaving their campus by bus and entering India through the Sonamura Border near Agartala. The state government has activated a helpline number (1800-345-3644) for citizens of Meghalaya who may require assistance due to the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh.
Additional SP (Jowai) Hiwot Rymbai has been deputed as a nodal officer on the border along with executive officer of the Land Port Authority Dawki, Thomas, as assistant nodal officer.

NEET-UG Paper Leak: Change of Exam Centre Not An Option, Only Correction for Exam City Allowed, NTA May Tell SC - News18

 The National Testing Agency’s submission will be in response to the court’s query on how many students opted for change in exam centre for appearing in the NEET-UG 2024, News18 has learnt

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is likely to inform the apex court that ‘change of exam centre’ is not an option given to candidates. Instead, they can only apply for ‘change of exam city’ — which can still be rejected by the agency. The NTA’s submission will be in response to the court’s query on how many students opted for change in exam centre for appearing in the NEET-UG 2024, News18 has learnt.

The Supreme Court, hearing the petitions on NEET-UG on July 18, had asked NTA to furnish details of candidates who changed exam centres and their respective results thereof in the next hearing in the matter that is scheduled for Monday (July 22).

According to the NTA, candidates can apply for changes or corrections in fields in the application form, including the one for correction of exam city.

Approximately 1.25 lakh applications were received by the NTA overall from across the country for change of fields in the form. The agency, on July 22, will clarify that of these, how many were requests for change of exam city and what were the results of these candidates, News18 has gathered.

In case of Godhra, where there has been an allegation of malpractice, the NTA had told the court during the arguments on July 18 that 34 candidates had applied for change of exam city, of which only 14 applications were accepted for correction. Of these 14 candidates, only one has passed the exam.

The agency has told the court that in Godhra, there were only two exam centres where 1,860 and 654 students gave the exam on May 5 when NEET-UG was conducted across the country.

The agency maintains that in case of Godhra, where an attempt was made to manipulate the OMR sheets of some candidates, it was foiled through prompt action taken by the district administration. It also said that an analysis of the results of candidates from these two centres does not show abnormally high scores which, in case of manipulation, would have been higher than the national average.

The SC is hearing a batch of pleas seeking re-test of NEET-UG this year, which ran into allegations of paper leaks and irregularities at various places. There have been allegations of malpractice from specific centres in Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

The apex court is expected to give its final verdict on July 22 after reviewing pleas seeking the exam's cancellation, a re-test, and a court-monitored investigation into malpractice allegations.
